Big blue and red sails over a Granville forecourt
This one is Granville, not Parramatta. It is a couple of suburbs south of the Parramatta CBD. Big sails in blue and red over a commercial site, carried on red steel posts and pulled to corner heights that don't match. Those heights put a twist through the cloth, which holds it tight and runs rain off the low side, with no belly of fabric to catch it.
Underneath is open concrete, with cars parked across it and people working between them. The blue sail carries the front of the site from a high corner on the left, the red one picks up behind it, and between them they cover the run from the street back to the fence. The site opens straight onto the road, so the cloth has to sit high enough for a ute to come through. The fabric blocks up to 99% of UV, with a 10 to 15 year warranty on it.

The housing here splits two ways. The older brick-and-tile streets run deep, and the back slab usually sits hard against the western fence, so the yard turns into a hotplate from about three o'clock. Closer to the CBD it's townhouses and terraces with a courtyard about the size of a car space and a neighbour on every side, so the sail has to hang off walls that are already there. Either way the afternoon sun comes in low off the west, and bare concrete holds that warmth long after the sun's gone. A sail that only reaches the table leaves the rest of the slab in full sun, so the western corner is the one to get right.
Around Parramatta that means shade cloth over a patio, a pool or a courtyard, on posts we set ourselves. The same posts will carry a waterproof PVC roof when the space has to keep working in the rain, and that fabric gets welded at the seams. Colour matters more than people expect, and a darker cloth will cut the glare underneath while a lighter one keeps the space bright. It starts with a measure. We come out, take the sizes and draw the structure over a photo of your place, so you can see where it sits and what it covers. The design gets decided standing in the yard: which corners go high, and whether the house wall will take a fixing or the load has to come off posts. We are licensed in NSW (294924C) and 40-odd years into this, with more than 3,000 jobs behind us. Every sail is engineered to the NSW wind codes, and certification is there if you want it. A sail that isn't pulled up hard will flog itself loose over a couple of seasons, and that load ends up in the footings. Fabric relaxes over the years, so one wants re-tensioning a few summers in, and we do that as well as repair and replace sails we didn't build. September is the month to give one a wash, before the summer sun bakes on whatever landed over winter.
Parramatta is about 5 minutes from our Rydalmere factory, where every sail we install is measured, cut, welded and finished. We work weekends, so the measure can land when someone's home.

Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Parramatta?+
Almost never. Most home shade sails are exempt development in NSW, so there is no application to lodge and no waiting period. A heritage street, an unusually large span or a commercial site can be the exception, and that gets worked out at the free measure, before any posts are ordered.
Where is a Parramatta sail made?+
At 40 Bridge Street, Rydalmere, in the same council area as you. It is cut and sewn there, and we come back to fit it once the footings have taken.
Can you shade a small townhouse courtyard?+
Yes. A tight courtyard usually wants one high fixing into solid brickwork, with one or two slim posts carrying the low corners. That keeps the floor clear, and the low corner still has to sit high enough to walk under.
