Umbrellas on a city rooftop terrace
This one is not Parramatta, but it answers a question we get asked here constantly. A paved rooftop terrace, blue umbrellas over timber tables and benches, towers standing close on three sides and an older sandstone building across the way. On a roof slab there is nothing to dig into, so the shade stands on its own bases and the floor stays clear.
A townhouse courtyard has the same problem in miniature: a floor you would rather not break into, walls that belong to somebody else, and not much room to give away to a post. The first thing worth working out is where a support can go without costing you the use of the space.

In a small courtyard the first question is usually where a support can stand without blocking the floor. A bigger patio gives you more choices, and it still wants the shade checked against the hour you use it.
Tell us what should sit under the cover: a table, a pool edge, a parked car or a group of seats. Bring photos showing the doors, the boundaries and the fixing points you have in mind. We assess the connections and the post positions at the site measure.

Rain cover is its own decision. A waterproof roof wants supporting capacity, pitch and drainage, and the open sides still matter when the rain comes in at an angle.

The housing here splits two ways. The older brick and tile streets run deep, with the back slab hard against the western fence, so the yard turns into a hotplate from about three o'clock. Closer to the CBD it is townhouses and terraces with a courtyard the size of a car space and a neighbour on every side, so the sail often has to work off walls that are already there. Can you shade a driveway that is also the only way down the side?+
Usually. Posts are the hard part, so we look for corners that can go on the house or the fence line and keep the run clear. Where one has to stand in the driveway it goes hard against the boundary, and the gate swing and the car door get checked before it is settled.
Can you shade a small townhouse courtyard?+
Yes. A tight courtyard usually wants one high fixing into solid brickwork with a slim post or two carrying the low corners, which keeps the floor clear. Boundaries, strata or owner consent and door clearance can narrow the options, so send photos from more than one angle.
Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Parramatta?+
In our experience of ordinary home enquiries, almost never. Size, height, where it sits on the block and any restriction on the land are what decide it, and around here a heritage street or a strata scheme is the usual complication. Our NSW approval guide starts you off.
