What the published Australian guides put on shade sails, and what changes the number once someone stands in your yard.
A new skin on sound posts and a four-post build on bare lawn can look much the same from above. Underneath they are different jobs, and that is most of the gap between one quote and another.
Published Australian rates, supply and install
$120 per m²
SuperTrades lists standard HDPE shade cloth at $120 a square metre on existing fixings, which it works out at about $3,000 for a 25 m² patio sail.
$160 per m²
Heavy commercial or high UV fabric is listed at $160 a square metre, about $4,000 across the same 25 m².
$220 per m²
Waterproof or waterproofed sail material sits at the top of that guide’s range, $220 a square metre, about $5,500 over 25 m².
The same guide keeps the structure separate from the cloth. A new steel post and footing adds $1,000 each, a heavy-duty or tall post $1,400 each, and hard dig, rock, tight access or awkward roof and fence fixings add $35 a square metre. It also names a minimum job charge of $2,500, which is why a very small sail rarely comes in as cheaply as its area suggests.
For the roofed alternatives, Airtasker’s Australian cost guides put a pergola installation at $1,000 low, $4,000 median and $7,000 high, and an awning installation from $395 to $7,100 including labour and material. Those are different structures doing a different job, so read them as a comparison between categories.

Why the same area can produce different quotes
Fabric is only one part of the invoice. A clear patch of lawn with machine access is a different proposition from the same span behind a narrow side gate, with rock under the paving and no suitable house connection.
- 1. Size and span. A longer reach changes the loads as well as the amount of cloth.
- 2. House fixings. A convenient-looking wall or fascia still has to be opened up and checked before anything is fixed to it.
- 3. Fabric. Breathable shade cloth and waterproof membrane solve different problems.
- 4. Posts. Count the new supports, their finish and the work to install them.
- 5. Footings. Ground conditions, excavation and reinstatement belong in the scope.
- 6. Access. Gate width and the path for machinery affect how the work is done.
- 7. Wind and engineering. The design has to suit the location and the structure.

Where a smaller scope can help

Old posts can look fine from the lawn and still be the wrong size for the new sail, so have them measured and checked.

What turns a range into a number

What is the cheapest way to get real shade?+
A small sail over the part of the yard you actually use, instead of a big one stretched across all of it. The fixed costs land on every job whatever its size, which is why the per-metre rate on a tiny sail always reads high. Do bigger sails cost less per square metre?+
Per square metre of cloth, usually yes. The fixed part of a job spreads further across a larger area, which is why published rates for small work read so much higher than rates for large work. The total still climbs, because a longer span wants bigger posts and deeper footings than a short one does.
Does council approval add to the cost?+
In our experience of ordinary home enquiries, almost never. What decides it is the size of the sail, its height, where it sits on the block and what the land itself carries, and those conditions are set out in our guide to council approval in NSW.
