Two big sails over a Granville forecourt
A blue sail and a red one over a car wash forecourt in Granville, each carried on a tall steel centre post. The corners are pulled to mismatched heights, high on one side and held low on the other. That twist is what keeps the fabric drum-tight. It also runs water off the low corners instead of letting it pond, and it stops the slow flapping that wears a slack sail out. The posts sit at the edges, out of the way of the cars.
Concrete takes the sun all day and hands it back as heat, and an open forecourt has nothing over it to slow that down. The fabric blocks up to 99% of UV. Behind the sails you can see the street and the price board, and on a site shaped like that there is no eave or awning for cover to hang off, so anything that shades it has to stand on its own posts.

Shade for a Western Sydney block
Granville is older Sydney: brick homes on modest blocks, carports beside the driveway, plenty of concrete and not much eave, then shopfronts, workshops and forecourts along the main roads. Our factory is one suburb over in Rydalmere. Western Sydney runs hotter than the coast, and a paved yard with no eave over it wears the worst of that in the afternoon. Cloth over the paving is what gets the ground back into use, and it wants to sit high enough for the hot air to escape from underneath.
First someone comes out and measures the space, then we draw the structure over a photo of your own place, so the post positions and the way the fabric meets the roofline are settled before anything is ordered. What the corners can honestly be fixed to, and where a post can go without eating the driveway, both get worked out at that visit. Around Granville that is shade cloth over a patio, a carport, a pool or a play area, on posts sized for the sail. Where the space has to keep working in the rain, the same structure takes a waterproof PVC roof. PVC sheds nothing through the weave, so it wants more fall built into it than cloth does.
Older sails need work too, out here: fabric bleached out, or a fitting worn through its own thread. We re-tension and repair sails we did not put up ourselves. Fabric relaxes a little through its first summer, so one that went up drum-tight can want a pull-up after the first hot run. Almost never. That is the answer to whether council has to be involved. Most home sails count as exempt development in NSW, and our council approval guide walks through the sites that sit outside it. We are licensed in NSW (294924C) and 40-odd years into this, with more than 3,000 jobs behind us, and our sails carry a 10 to 15 year warranty.

Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Granville?+
Almost never. The exceptions are the uncommon ones: a heritage listing, a sail far bigger than a domestic one, or a corner that lands inside a boundary setback. Where a site does need approval or an engineering certificate, we prepare the documentation as part of the job.
Can a sail fix to the house, or does it need posts?+
Often both on the same sail. A rafter or a brick wall can carry a corner where there is something solid behind it. Where the house cannot take the pull, or the shape wants that corner further out in the yard, it goes on a post with a footing sized for the load.
Do you shade businesses as well as homes?+
Yes. A forecourt or a staff break area gets the same engineering as a backyard sail, with posts and footings sized for what they carry, and the structure is engineered to the NSW wind codes with certification available on request.
