A Blacktown customer, and an example of shared-space shade
A community centre in Blacktown had us install a cover there. The photograph alongside comes from a different A-Z job: two blue sails overlapping above a lawn courtyard, with picnic tables on the paved pad underneath and the posts set well back in the grass. It shows one way to cover a gathering space and leave the lawn around it open.

Plan the shade around the activity
For an exposed patio or carpark, start with the area people use and the hours it needs cover. A sail drawn over the paving may cast its afternoon shadow beyond it, so orientation matters as much as size.
For a home, start by marking the ground you want out of the sun. Leave room for doors and gates to open, and show us any existing pergola or possible house connections. Our residential examples help compare the layouts.

Blacktown sits a long way from the water, so the southerly that takes the edge off the eastern suburbs gets here late in the day. The older streets near the station have big trees over them. The estates further out have none of that yet, so from November through to March there is very little standing between the sun and the yard. Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Blacktown?+
In our experience of ordinary home enquiries, almost never. Size, height, where it sits on the block and any restriction on the land are what decide it, and a community or commercial site follows its own pathway. Our NSW approval guide walks through those checks.
Does a shade sail make much difference on a hot day?+
It takes the direct sun off the ground it covers, and knitted cloth breathes, so hot air lifts through it instead of banking up underneath. The cloth blocks up to 99% of UV. Waterproof PVC keeps rain off as well, though it holds a bit more warmth.
Can you cover community sites and carparks, or only houses?+
Both. Send the site plan, the hours the space is used and the areas that have to stay open. We go through the structure, the site checks and the access for installation at the measure.
