The cover at ADRA Blacktown Community Centre
ADRA runs a community centre in Blacktown, and we installed a cover there. The photo alongside comes from a different job of ours, a courtyard shared by a block of units.
Tall steel posts stand in the lawn and carry two blue sails that overlap in the middle, so the cover reaches across the brick path and the timber picnic tables set beside it, with the units and the fence line clear behind. Here's what ADRA Blacktown Community Centre said afterwards in their Google review. “We recently had A-Z Shades install a cover at our Community Centre, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. Blacktown sits a long way from the water, so the southerly that takes the edge off the eastern suburbs gets here late in the day. The ground holds whatever the day put into it, and a west-facing slab or an open carpark keeps giving that heat back long after the sun has come off it. The older streets near the station have big trees over them. The estates further out don't have that yet, so there isn't much between the sun and the yard from November through March.

A typical block here gives you one solid fixing, usually the house wall, and the rest has to come off posts. Where those posts land gets worked out at the measure, because it decides how much of the slab stays covered late in the day and which way water runs off the fabric.

Blacktown is about 20 minutes from our Rydalmere factory, where every sail we install is measured, cut, welded and finished. On a bare yard with nothing to fix to, the footings are sized for the sail they carry.

Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Blacktown?+
Almost never. Most home shade sails are exempt development in NSW, so there's no application and nothing to wait on. On the rare site that does need approval or an engineering certificate, we prepare the documentation as part of the job.
Does a shade sail make much difference on a hot day?+
It takes the direct sun off you, and knitted cloth breathes, so hot air lifts through it instead of banking up underneath. The fabric blocks up to 99% of UV. Waterproof PVC keeps the rain off too, though it holds a little more warmth.
Do you cover community sites and carparks, or only houses?+
Both. Every structure is engineered to the NSW wind codes, and we can have the certification sent through if you need it.
