Custom shade sails for Narrabeen and the Northern Beaches, from a strata courtyard to a school playground or a back deck.
A job we did here
A long charcoal sail beside a clipped hedge
One charcoal sail set low and wide over the lawn, carried on two slim dark posts, one standing in the garden bed and the other out in the grass. The shape is deliberately shallow because the job was to shade a strip that people walk and sit along, not to make a feature of the sail itself.
Both posts sit clear of the hedge line, so the cloth spans the planting without anything landing in the middle of the lawn. The palms and gums behind it do the rest of the work overhead. Close to the water the hardware matters as much as the fabric, because salt finds cheap fittings long before it touches the cloth, and a corner that seizes will tell you about it in a couple of summers.

Wind is the design problem on the Beaches
Start with where the wind comes from, not where the sun is. A site a few streets off the lagoon takes a straight run at the southerly that a yard in the Hills never sees, and that sets post size, footing depth and how hard the cloth gets tensioned before anything else gets a say.
At the measure we look at the space, the anchors you already have and the hours it actually needs shade. The blueprint shows the proposed cover and where the supports would land. Bring photos of the yard at the hour the sun is causing the problem, because that is the hour the design has to solve.
A pool sail and a driveway sail need different clearances. A cantilever helps where a corner post would block the way through, as long as there is room for its supporting structure and its footing.
Choose the membrane for the job. Shade cloth lets air and rain through, which matters more on an exposed site than most people expect. A waterproof roof wants suitable supports, a roof shape and somewhere for the water to go, and posts put in for cloth get assessed before anything changes to PVC.
The site measure, blueprint and written quote are free, and the instant estimate will give you a starting range. We are family owned and every sail is Australian made at our own factory. We also repair and re-tension existing sails, including ones another company put up.
Narrabeen runs from the lagoon down to the beach and the two ends behave differently. Streets near the water get salt and an open run at the southerly. Back up the hill the problem is more often an afternoon sun on a west-facing deck with very little to fix to. Our Australian Standards guide covers how wind load is worked out, and the NSW approval guide has the checks for area, height and boundaries.

Every one of these is Narrabeen. A school playground, sails against a building eave, a corner above a planted courtyard, a paved side entry, a childcare play yard, and one shot straight into a bright sky.

Good to know
Shade sails in Narrabeen, answered
Does being near the water change the build?+
Yes, and mostly in the hardware. Salt air works on fittings a long time before it works on cloth, so the fixings, the tensioners and the fasteners are what we look at hardest on a coastal site. Post size and footing depth get set by how exposed the spot is rather than by the size of the sail.
Will it stay up in a storm?+
A sail sized and tensioned for its site is meant to. The ones that come down are usually undersized posts, shallow footings, or a fixing into something that was never going to carry it. We work to the wind the site actually gets, and we go through that with you at the measure rather than after.
Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Narrabeen?+
In our experience of ordinary home enquiries, almost never. Size, height, where it sits on the block and any restriction on the land are what decide it, and on the Beaches a foreshore or environmental overlay is worth looking at early. Our NSW approval guide explains those checks.
