Two charcoal sails over an open yard at Rouse Hill, 230 square metres of shade between them. A steel T-post stands out in the middle of the yard and its cross-head carries a high corner of each sail off either end, so one footing does the work of two posts and the ground underneath stays clear.
The outer corners drop away to fixings along the roofline of the red brick building, well below the head of that post, and the difference in height is what pulls the cloth taut and keeps it quiet in wind. For a large area, that arrangement is worth comparing with a post at every corner. Span, ground conditions and whatever happens underneath decide which one wins.
