A sail over a Kellyville courtyard
Two sand-coloured triangles over the courtyard beside the front door. One corner is bolted high onto the render by the archway, and the others are carried on slim steel posts set behind the hedge. The mismatched corner heights are the whole trick. That twist pulls the fabric hard and quiet, and it stops the slow flapping that chews a slack sail through.
You can see the arched window behind them sitting in shade, and the posts standing back in the garden bed, so nothing lands in the walkway to the front door or on the brick paving that runs out to the driveway. The hedge hides the post bases from the street.

Kellyville is two builds standing side by side. The older Hills streets went up in the 1990s, big two-storey brick and render homes on generous blocks, and those gardens have had time to grow into some of their own shade. North of there the newer release land has none of that yet. The saplings are still saplings, and a paved courtyard or a back terrace takes the whole afternoon under a shallow eave. Both ends of the suburb end up asking for the same thing: cover over open ground.

That drawing is where the corner heights and the post positions get settled. The same posts will carry a waterproof PVC roof if you want the space usable when it rains, and a cantilever umbrella works where you'd rather not put a post in the middle of the lawn. We're family-owned, licensed in NSW (294924C) and 40-odd years into this, with more than 3,000 jobs behind us. We also repair and re-tension sails, including ones we did not build, so a tired skin on sound posts does not have to mean starting again.

Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Kellyville?+
Almost never. Most home shade sails count as exempt development in NSW, which means there is nothing for you to lodge with council. On the rare site that does need approval or an engineering certificate, we prepare the paperwork and engineering as part of the job.
How long does the install take?+
It depends on the yard. Footings go in first and the concrete has to take before anything gets tensioned, so a job with new posts in it runs longer than one hung off structure that is already there.
Will it hold up to a westerly?+
Every structure is engineered to the NSW wind codes, and the posts and footings are sized for the sail they carry. Certification is available on request.
