Looking straight up from the court: a sand sail stretched between galvanised posts, with the ball netting carried on the same structure and running out past the cloth on every side. The fabric is tensioned into a proper twist so it sheds wind instead of sitting flat and drumming through the night.
A rooftop is the hardest place to put a sail. There is nothing to bury a footing in, the wind arrives with nothing standing in front of it, and every fixing has to go into a structure that was designed to be a roof rather than to carry a shade load. What looks like a simple sail over a court is mostly a conversation about what is underneath it.

Replacing a sail is not the same job as fitting one
Most of what we have done in Auburn has been a replacement, on a structure that is still standing: cloth worn out, or a sail taken out by a storm. The posts and the fixings get assessed before anything new goes on them, because the old sail usually failed for a reason, and the reason is often not the cloth.
At the measure we look at the space, the anchors and the hours it needs shade. The blueprint shows the proposed cover and where the supports land. For a replacement, bring whatever you know about the original: roughly when it went up, who put it there, and what it was doing before it gave way.
A pool sail and a driveway sail need different clearances. A cantilever helps where a corner post would block the way through. Over a court or a hardstand, a structure on its own posts is usually the answer rather than anything hung off a building.
Choose the membrane for the job. Shade cloth lets air and rain through. A waterproof roof wants suitable supports, a roof shape and drainage, and posts put in for a cloth sail get assessed before any change to PVC.

Can you reuse the posts that are already there?+
Sometimes, and we look at what is holding them up before relying on them. A post that carried a smaller or lighter sail is not automatically right for the new one, and a footing that has moved will tell you as soon as the cloth goes under tension. It gets assessed for the load it is about to take, not the one it used to.
What does a storm-damaged sail usually need?+
It depends on what gave way. Cloth that has torn cleanly off its fixings can often be replaced onto the structure that is already there. If a post has bent or a footing has lifted, that gets sorted first, because new cloth on a structure that failed once only buys you a season.
Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Auburn?+
