A canopy over a Merrylands play yard
One square canopy over a childcare yard, purple on top and lime green underneath, carried on posts set at the edge of the play surface. Every fitting sits at the top of a post, well above head height. Underneath there are small playhouses, a slide and somewhere to sit.
A yard like this has to be drawn with the equipment and the circulation on the same page. The canopy outline is only the starting point. Where the shade lands at the hours the children are outside, how staff see across the yard, and how much room is left around each piece of equipment all move the final layout.

Put the activity on the plan first
For a courtyard or a play yard, show us where people sit, move and play. Supports get planned around that, including the door openings and the routes through the space.
A home patio may only need one clear seating area; a childcare centre needs cover over several activities at once. Our residential page and education page show those different starting points, and a larger outdoor learning space has the COLA option as well.
On a tight site, check what can get down the side before the post positions are settled. Digging and lifting want more room than the finished support takes up. A wall gets assessed for the pull before it carries a corner, and what is behind the brickwork is the part that matters.
For afternoon use, photograph where the sunlight reaches the seating or the play area. The shadow moves as the sun drops, so the drawing has to account for the hours you care about. Fabric and colour are worth checking for the light and glare they leave underneath.

There is barely room to get down the side of our house. Is that a problem?+
Rarely. Posts and a folded sail are the biggest things that have to come through, and the fabric arrives finished, so there is no cutting or sewing in your yard. Send a photo and the narrowest clear width, and we will say at the measure whether it changes the design.
Can you work around a childcare centre that stays open?+
Yes. Footings and fabric are separate visits anyway, because the concrete has to cure before the sail goes on. Send the operating hours and the site plan, and the work and the separated area get planned around them. Our Google rating is 5.0 if the centre wants to check who it is letting in.
Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Merrylands?+
In our experience of ordinary home enquiries, almost never. Size, height, where it sits on the block and any restriction on the land are what decide it. A childcare or community site also has its own planning and owner requirements to confirm. Our NSW approval guide shows the starting points.
