What each symptom means, and where the line between a repair and a rebuild sits.

Shade cloth gives up long before the steel holding it does. A sail that sags or splits is usually a small job on a sound structure. What kills a structure shows up somewhere else entirely, down at the posts.

It sags and slaps about in the wind. Knitted cloth stretches through its first season and keeps creeping for years after. If the turnbuckles have thread left to wind, we pull it back drum-tight. If they are wound out to their limit, we shorten the cable or refit the corner.

A seam has let go, or the stitching has gone furry. Furry stitching that has not opened yet is a warning. It gets restitched in fresh UV-stable thread and goes back up. An open corner seam wants attention sooner.

The fittings are rusty or slipping. Shackles, turnbuckles, D-rings and cable are consumables. They take every gust the sail catches, and near the coast the salt gets into them. Replace hardware across the whole structure, since it all aged together.

There is a tear out in the middle of the panel. Look at the cloth around it before you patch. A clean split in sound fabric will hold a patch for years, though frayed and soft edges around it will not.

The cloth is stiff and chalky. Rub it. If colour lifts onto your palm and the fabric feels papery instead of springy, the UV inhibitors are spent and the cloth is finished.

New cloth, same posts

When the fabric is finished but the structure under it is sound, you replace the skin and leave the rest alone. The posts and footings stay where they are, and the engineering does not change.

We measure the existing structure corner to corner, because a sail is patterned to the fixing points on the structure itself. Then we cut and sew the new skin at our Rydalmere factory and come back to fly it.

Commercial carpark structures are the clearest case. The steel is engineered and expensive to replicate, and it isn't what has worn out.

When the lot has to come out

Now and then the failure is underneath. A structure has to come out when the parts holding it up have gone, or were wrong from the start. There's no point putting a new skin over a fault.

  • Leaning posts, or footings that have moved. Once a post pulls, the geometry is wrong and tension cannot put it back.
  • Rust at ground line. A post can look perfect at eye height and be eaten through where it meets the concrete.
  • Fixings into things that are not structural. Gutters and single brick courses were never built to hold a tensioned sail.
  • A design that was wrong from the start. Too flat, or spans too long for the posts under them.

Any of those and the job is a rebuild, measured and engineered to NSW wind codes. Either way the measure and the blueprint are free and the quote is written.

What we can tell from photos

Three pictures are usually enough, and a phone camera is plenty.

What to send

  1. The whole sail

    From far enough back to see its shape. That is where a sag shows up, and the shape tells us how it was built.

  2. The worst corner

    Close in on the fitting and the stitching, whichever corner looks the tiredest.

  3. A post where it meets the ground

    Get the camera right down to the concrete. If you can reach it, scrape the paint at the base with a key first, so we can see what is under it.

Will you repair a sail another company installed?+

Yes. Any brand, any age. We measure the structure, read what has failed and quote on what it needs.

Is a cheap domestic sail worth repairing?+

Often it is not. Light cloth is not reinforced at the corners to take real tension, so restitching one corner moves the load along to the next weak spot. Heavy commercial-grade cloth is a different thing and takes a repair well.

Should I take the sail down before you look at it?+

Leave it up if it is safe to. A sail still hanging, even a slack one, shows how it was built and where the load has gone; folded in a bag it tells you very little. If it has already come down, keep the fittings with it.

How long should a sail last before this comes up?+

Ten to fifteen years in Sydney sun, if it was tensioned properly and washed down now and then. Much under that usually points to light cloth, or years spent slack and flapping. Our guide to shade sail lifespan has the detail.
