A job we did here

Terracotta sails at a Glenmore Park school

A run of sails down the covered walkway at a school in Glenmore Park, the terracotta sitting close to the red roof trim on the buildings either side. Stand under it and the shade reads as part of the place. The steel posts stand in the walkway itself, and the corner heights are staggered panel to panel so the fabric pulls tight and sends water off the low side instead of holding it in a belly.

A hard yard banks heat all morning and hands it back through lunch. We measured it on site and made the sails at our Rydalmere factory. Our fabrics block up to 99% of UV, and our sails carry a 10 to 15 year warranty.

Shade in Glenmore Park

Shade for a Penrith basin block

Penrith often posts the hottest reading in Sydney, several degrees above the harbour on the same afternoon. Glenmore Park sits at the western edge of the basin, and the estate is newer than much of the city, which shows in the yards. The eaves are shallow, and the alfresco slab tends to sit hard against the western wall of the house. That slab is lovely in July and unusable in January, when the sun comes across open ground from mid-afternoon and lands square on the back doors. Schools and families count shade as essential kit.

We come out, measure the yard, and draw the structure over a photo of your place so you can see the thing before it exists: where the posts land and how the fabric sits against your roofline. None of that costs you anything, and the quote that follows is in writing. If you want a number first, our instant estimate sizes one from your own measurements.

Around Glenmore Park the job is shade cloth over a patio or a play area, on posts we set, and there is a wider run of that backyard work on our residential page. A pool sail takes the glare off the water and the heat out of the coping. Where the space has to stay usable in the rain, the same posts will carry a waterproof PVC roof instead.

Schools and childcare centres get the same treatment, from one sail over a sandpit to a full playground scheme. That side of it lives on our educational page, and there's a guide to NSW school shade grants if funding is the question. Almost never, on approval; our guide to council approval sets out the uncommon sites that need more.

Family-owned, licensed in NSW (294924C), 40-odd years into this, and more than 3,000 jobs behind us. When a sail wants tightening after a run of big summers, we come back and re-tension it.

Glenmore Park is about 55 minutes from our Rydalmere factory, where every sail we install is measured, cut, welded and finished. Free measure, blueprint and written quote, seven days a week, then we build it, footings to final tension.

We also cover Penrith, South Penrith, Regentville, Jamisontown and Mulgoa.

Shade sails in Glenmore Park, answered

Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Glenmore Park?+

Almost never. Most backyard sails sit inside the exempt development rules in NSW. The occasional site does need approval or an engineering certificate, and when it does we prepare the paperwork as part of the job.

Can you match the fabric to our roof?+

Usually, yes. The colour range is wide, and a colour that looks right on a screen can go flat against a warm brick. Hold the swatch against the brickwork in daylight before you decide.

What holds it up in a summer westerly?+

Engineering, mostly. Every structure is engineered for the wind region your street sits in, and the posts and footings are sized for the sail they carry. Each corner pulls up on a turnbuckle, so a sail that has stretched over its first summer can be wound tight again.
