Shade for a South-West Sydney block

Cabramatta and the suburbs around it run their shade hard. Blocks are tight, and a lot of the shade out this way does two jobs at once, covering a carport and a side entry, or a forecourt and the footpath tables in front of it. A sail here stays up through winter, so it takes every summer of UV and every winter of wet, and each westerly pulls on the same four corners. Fabric fades and stretches, and sooner or later a turnbuckle backs itself off. On a tight block the posts are the hard part, because there are only so many places you can stand one without losing the driveway or the gate.

The fabric usually goes long before the steel does. Shadecloth stretches and the colour flattens off. Tears show up at the corner webbing first. If the frame under it is still doing its job, a re-tension or a fresh skin on the posts you already own will keep it working, and that is shade sail repair work we do on sails we never installed as well as our own. For a new sail we measure first, then draw the structure over a photo of your place so you can see where the posts land and which way the water runs off, all before a hole is dug. Post size and footing depth follow the span and the pitch, so a wide sail pulled up shallow wants more steel in the ground than a small one pitched steep. Our sails are engineered to NSW wind codes, with certification available on request.

Carports, backyards and pools are residential jobs. A shop forecourt or a staff carpark is commercial. Knitted shadecloth is what most sails are cut from, and it lets heat escape up through the weave. Waterproof PVC goes on the same posts when you want the space usable in the rain, and it wants a steeper pitch so the water has somewhere to go. A sail that has gone slack won't sit still. Loose fabric flaps in any bit of wind, and that movement wears the stitching at the corners and works the fixings loose. Grit and mould settle into the cloth as well, so a wash now and then keeps the colour longer and gives you a look at the hardware while you're up there.
