One white post, dead centre, with the fabric pulled up to a peak on top of it and out to four low corners. That's the near sail: one post, four anchor points, and the ground under it stays clear. The smaller one behind it sits over the fenced yard, and behind both of them is a big brick-and-steel building. The peak gives rain somewhere to run and holds the cloth drum-tight, and a tight sail is a quiet sail.
The fabric blocks up to 99% of UV, and it breathes, so heat that builds up underneath can lift out through the cloth. A hip shape like this suits open ground, where there's no house wall or fence line to take a corner and every anchor point has to be a post that goes in for the job. The high centre and the low corners are what hold a wide span tight, and that's why water runs off instead of pooling in the fabric.

Shade for a South-West Sydney site
Miller was built as part of the Green Valley estate, and the layout still shows it: wide verges, and open reserves sitting between the schools and the halls. Shade on a public site lives a harder life than shade over a backyard patio. It gets used by everyone and checked by nobody, and it still has to ride out a summer storm. So every one of these is engineered to NSW wind codes, with certification available on request.
It starts with a measure. We come out, take the dimensions and draw the structure over a photo of the site, so you can see the shape, where the posts land and how it sits against the roofline before anything gets built. Home jobs sit on our residential page, and the public-site work is on the commercial page. Where a space has to stay dry as well as shaded, the same posts will carry a waterproof PVC roof. A cantilever throws its shade in from one side, which is the answer when a post in the middle of the space is out of the question. The drawing is what settles which of those a site is asking for.
A tensioned sail pulls sideways as well as down at every corner, and that load ends up in the footing. On open ground there's nothing else to share it with, so the posts and the concrete under them carry the lot. It's why a free-standing structure wants more below ground than one that can hang a corner off a solid wall.
Height and pitch decide where the shade lands and when. A sail set for the middle of summer lets a lot more sun under it in June, when the sun sits low and the shadow runs long. In a west-facing yard, that's the thing to plan around. Colour is worth a thought as well. Darker cloth reads cooler underneath, while a lighter one keeps the space beneath it brighter, which matters where people read or work under the sail.
We're licensed in NSW (294924C) and 40-odd years in, with more than 3,000 jobs behind us. What counts later on is who you can ring when a sail wants re-tensioning, or when a skin has aged out on posts that are still good. We'll re-tension and re-skin sails we didn't build, and repairs and replacement skins are part of the work. Do I need council approval for a shade sail in Miller?+
Almost never. A home shade sail is usually exempt development in NSW, which means no application and no waiting. Community and commercial sites are the ones that want a closer look, and where a job does need approval we prepare the documentation for it.
Do you work on community, school and public sites?+
Yes. Schools, childcare centres, halls and carparks are on the commercial page, with the photos. Tell us at the measure whether the site has to stay open while the work happens.
What upkeep does a structure like this need?+
Very little. A hose down now and then keeps dirt and mould off the cloth, and a look at the tension after a big storm is worth doing. If it's gone slack, or a fitting has started to slip, that's a call for us.
