Shade cloth vs waterproof PVCWill you still be sitting there when it rains?
That one question narrows the choice. Then check the breeze, the light and where the water will land.
Choose knitted shade cloth when you want sun protection over a space you leave when it rains. Choose a waterproof PVC canopy when keeping rain off the area is part of the brief. A waterproof material still needs a properly designed canopy: slope, seams, edges and drainage all matter.
Which sounds like your space?
The pool, lawn or summer play area
Rain can pass through the knit. That suits a space where the main problem is sun, and an open, airy feel matters.
The dining table or outdoor kitchen
If you want to keep using it in rain, plan roof-like cover. Include the path to the back door and check rain blowing in at the edges.
A patio beside a garden
Waterproof cover can serve the table; cloth can shade the garden seating. The two areas do not have to use the same material.
What changes underneath
Cloth filters the sky through its texture. A solid membrane feels more like a ceiling. Both can be comfortable; a low canopy surrounded by walls needs particular attention to ventilation. Colour, height, nearby paving and the breeze affect the result, so there is no universal temperature difference to promise.
For either option, ask to see the actual fabric sample outside. Hold it overhead and then look back towards the house: the same cover that softens the patio can also reduce daylight through the doors.
The rain has to leave somewhere
Picture the low edge above your back step. Even a canopy that keeps water out through the fabric can send runoff straight across the doorway. Set the discharge point before choosing the final outline. The design may need a gutter and downpipe.
Wind-driven rain can reach underneath open sides. For a dining area, judge the dry footprint with the chairs pulled out, because it is always smaller than the membrane overhead.
Sun protection is a separate check
A colour name or a percentage labelled “shade” will not tell you how much UV the fabric stops. Ask for the selected fabric and colour's tested result. ARPANSA explains that coverage, open sky and reflected UV also affect the protection beneath a structure.

What about cleaning and future replacement?
Get the care instructions and warranty for the selected material. Leaf litter, grime and access to high corners deserve a place in the plan. When a membrane eventually needs replacement, the supports should be inspected before deciding what can stay. The lifespan guide explains that assessment.

Can shade cloth be made waterproof?+
No. Coating or backing a knitted cloth takes away the thing you picked it for, the breathability, and leaves you with a membrane nobody engineered to be one. If you want to stay out there while it rains, use a purpose-made waterproof canopy with the fall designed into it from the start.
Is it noisy under a waterproof canopy when it rains?+
You hear it. Rain lands on a solid membrane and runs off, where knitted cloth lets the water straight through, so a heavy shower is louder underneath a canopy. How loud depends on the span, the fall and how hard it is coming down. If a bedroom window looks onto the area, raise it early, while the fall and the outline are still easy to adjust on paper.
Can I use both on the same house?+
Yes, and plenty of places do. The part worth settling early is the boundary between them: where the canopy sheds its water, whether that lands on the cloth below or on a path, and how the two heights meet so one does not sit in the light of the other. Get that onto the plan and the rest is mostly colour.
