Choose the job first: shade an open area, build a roofed living space, or bring the sun back at the push of a button.
Shade an open pool, play area or patio and a sail is usually the answer. An outdoor room with a roof and built-in fittings is a pergola, while an awning is the one you put out and pull back in beside the house. They overlap, so the deciding question is what the space has to do on an ordinary day.

A tensioned membrane reaches between designed fixing points. Knitted cloth suits sun cover; waterproof fabric brings a drainage design into the brief.

Posts and beams carry the chosen roof. Lights, fans or screens can be built in when the structure is designed for them.

Include the chairs, the route back inside, the rain coming off the edge and where it lands. An open slatted pergola or knitted cloth will not give you that roof.

A retractable option hands you direct control. A carefully positioned fixed cover can do the same job if the angles are right.

Do not add them later to sail fabric or its perimeter cable.
A sail beside an existing pergola
An existing pergola looks like a ready-made anchor, and sometimes it is. The hidden beam behind its cladding has to be checked for the sail’s pull, along with the connections, the posts and the foundations. A beam that carries a roof downwards can still be the wrong thing to pull sideways on, which is why it gets opened up and looked at first.
Check the sun from your chair
A cover can look beautifully centred above the table and still leave the people on one side in full sun. Mark the seats you want shaded and the hour you use them, then test the proposed cover through the seasons. The government’s Your Home shading guide explains why orientation and winter access matter.
Summer comfort also comes down to airflow and the roof build-up. Insulation, ventilation and open sides can improve a solid-roof space, and calling every metal roof hot or every fabric cover cool misses those differences.
Compare complete proposals
- Cover: the same usable area and the same sun or rain requirement.
- Works: connections, footings, drainage, electrical work and surface repair.
- Operation: seasonal removal or retraction, cleaning access and replacement parts.

Is a shade sail cheaper than a pergola?+
Usually, yes, and the published guides say the same. What moves the sail price at your place is the number of posts, the height and what the footings hit on the way down. Four posts into clay is a different job from two posts into sandstone, which is why the number comes after the measure. The cost guide has the published ranges.
Do I need council approval for a shade sail in NSW?+
In our experience of ordinary home enquiries, almost never. What decides it is the size of the sail, its height, where it sits on the block and what the land itself carries, and those conditions are set out in our council guide. A pergola is a different structure with its own limits, so check that pathway separately.
Can a shade sail be waterproof like a pergola roof?+
Yes, with a waterproof PVC membrane. It wants more fall than knitted cloth, which usually means one corner sits noticeably lower than the others. Decide early where that water runs off and what it lands on, because a downpipe or a drain in the wrong spot is an expensive afterthought.
