How to wash a sail, how to read its tension by feel, and the point where it stops being a job for a broom handle.
A shade sail asks for very little. Two washes a year, a look up at it after a big blow, and a well-built sail runs for a decade and more. Leave it long enough and you're paying for a repair the brush would have prevented.
The wash
Shade cloth is knitted to shed water and dry fast, which is why a new sail looks after itself for a while. What creeps up on it is film: pollen and gum-leaf tannin, plus the grey dust that settles out of Sydney air. Film holds moisture against the yarn, and damp cloth is where mould gets started.
Hose it down
Hose both faces with plain water first. Most of what's on a sail is loose dust.
Mix the bucket
Mild dish soap in warm water. Nothing stronger than what washes dishes.
Brush along the weave
A soft broom or a car-wash brush on a pole. Long strokes along the weave, not circles.
Rinse twice
Soap left in the knit will collect dirt all over again.
Leave it up to dry
Leave it up and tensioned while it dries.
What should never touch a shade sail
- Pressure washers. The jet drives between the yarns and cuts stitching in one pass.
- Bleach and chlorine cleaners. They strip the UV inhibitors out of the yarn. The sail looks brighter for a season, then the cloth goes brittle.
- Stiff bristles and scourers. They fluff the fibres, and once the surface is fuzzy it holds dirt.
- Solvents and degreasers. Anything labelled heavy duty has no business on a membrane.
- The driveway itself. Don't drag a sail down to scrub it on concrete. Grit gets into the weave and abrades the yarn.
Mould shows as black speckling underneath, where a tree overhangs or the cloth sits in its own shade half the day. A soft brush and soapy water lift the living part. What stays behind is staining, which is cosmetic. It doesn't weaken the cloth. Bleach takes the stain out and the fabric's UV protection with it, and we'd rather leave a faintly speckled sail that still blocks up to 99% of UV.
Tension: how to read a sail by feel
A sail is a curved membrane pulled in opposing directions, and the curve is what keeps it quiet in wind. Once it goes slack the whole thing starts to flap, and flapping works the stitching night after night.
Check it without a tool. Push up into the middle with a broom handle: a sail at proper tension gives a little and springs straight back. Drum-tight is the old phrase and it's the right one. Then watch it in a breeze. The whole membrane should lift and settle as one piece. If a corner ripples on its own, or you hear it snap from inside the house, the tension has gone.

- A hollow in the middle: water pools there after rain, and the weight of it pulls the sail slacker again.
- A soft edge: the perimeter should feel like a bowstring.
- Turnbuckles wound right out: nothing left to take up.
- Fittings sitting crooked: a corner plate at an angle it didn't start at.
- A post out of plumb: that's a footing question, so leave it with us.
The seasonal rhythm

Should it come down for winter? For a permanent sail on posts we set, no. It was engineered to NSW wind codes. Demountable sails are made to come off, and time in a dry shed is time out of the sun, so wash it, dry it completely and fold it loosely. Store one damp and tight and it comes out of the cupboard mouldy.
When to stop and call us
You can handle the washing and a walk around the corners. Leave anything to do with thread or hardware to us, and anything at height. That's where a small problem turns into a big one while nobody's looking.
- Stitching starting to fray: thread sits on the surface, so UV finds it first. An opening seam is a restitch at our Rydalmere factory.
- Corners pulling out of shape: a stretched corner patch is carrying that whole side on its own.
- Fittings slipping or rusting: hardware is straightforward to replace, and a fitting that lets go takes the corner with it.
- Cloth gone chalky and pale: dry and stiff, with the colour gone out of it. That's UV, and washing won't bring it back.
- Anything needing a ladder: over water or up off a roof.
Chalky cloth is rarely the end of the structure. The posts and footings are most of what is standing in your yard, and if they are sound the job is a new skin on the frame you already have. Every sail that leaves our Rydalmere factory carries a 10 to 15 year warranty.

How often should I clean my shade sail?+
It depends on what is over it. Under a gum or a jacaranda, make it three washes a year, and over a pool more often again, because sunscreen and pool chemicals travel on the air and settle into the weave.
Can I use a pressure washer on a shade sail?+
No. A pressure-washer opening runs as a straight line along the seam, wherever the jet tracked, and that means a restitch.
Can I spray something on a shade sail to waterproof it?+
Leave it alone. Shade cloth is a knit, built to let air through and let water off, and a coating fills the gaps that make it work. You end up with a heavier sail that holds water and catches more wind. If you want rain cover, that's a solid roof or a waterproof PVC membrane, which is a different structure with different engineering.
